Nokia, the loser of the first media war "(VHS vs. Betamax) and the presentation of the Blu-ray Disc, making great progress in the fight against the coming HD-DVD.

Last week, Warner announced that the studio would release its movies exclusively on Blu-ray starting in June. Today, Paramount has decided to drop its support for HD DVD too. Both studies have now joined Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox and MGM as the only supporters of the Sony format. Universal Picturesremains the only major studio supporting HD DVD.

The recent efforts of Blu-ray Disc is a sign that the studio did not want to participate in the format war. Robin Harris writes on his ZDNet blog that "DVD sales have weakened and Love suspect that the HD format war is part of the problem." While competition is always good for consumers, high price tag and the future uncertain for the two competing formats have been designed to curtail their growthpotential.

Generic brands with low during the holiday shopping season, HD-DVD and Blu-ray still cost more than $ 200 per unit, compared to the progressive-scan DVD player at $ 50 or less. It is understandable that the buyer might want to risk hundreds of dollars into a format potentially dead, especially after having invested in an HDTV is not expensive. On the other hand, consumers may hold off on buying traditional DVD will soon be obsoleteanticipation of the new format. Recently thriving mail / internet video-rental market (Netflix and Blockbuster) have contributed to the decline of traditional DVD sales, after several years of double digit growth.

Another hypothesis is that Apple may soon be with Blu-ray as an optional upgrade for your MacBook. 6. January, Panasonic has introduced thin Blu-ray drive for laptops. Since Apple is the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association and the Panasonic is an importantManufacturer MacBook for all stations, the likelihood of Apple Blu-ray can reveal MacBook at Macworld next high.

What does it mean for consumers? Concentrating on one format, the producers will be a reduction in production to help and support the local shops, a piano store and focus their marketing campaigns. Ends with analog television, a common format to help consumers, digital television and next-generation format has been adopted. If the Blu-ray is not winning, but it would be a realDowner for those who have the money for an Xbox 360 add-on HD-DVD-. But hey, nobody wants to see two of Sony media format wars in a row to lose, right?
